Abstract

This study discusses the Islamic educational innovations introduced by Muhammadiyah in response to the discriminatory and secular Dutch colonial education system. During the colonial period, Dutch education neglected religious teachings, while traditional educational institutions were less relevant to the needs of the time. Muhammadiyah, founded by K.H. Ahmad Dahlan in 1912, integrated religious and general knowledge into its curriculum. This innovation introduced interactive teaching methods, effective administrative systems, and expanded educational access for all, including women. The study demonstrates that Muhammadiyah's innovations not only addressed the challenges posed by colonial education but also made significant contributions to the development of Indonesia's national education system. Muhammadiyah's educational model has inspired many other Islamic educational institutions and remains relevant in shaping a generation capable of thriving in the modern era without losing their Islamic identity.
